Big Walks around Cilcain. 10 miles +

Big Walk 1 - Cilcain to Bodfari and Return.    17 miles.  Climb / descend  3,590 ft.

This is a tough walk both in distance and climbing terms, but it takes in some magnificent countryside in North Wales. Your efforts will be well rewarded.

There is limited parking at the old waterworks SJ171 647 or larger public parking at SJ169 652, Cilcain. Both are free.

Setting Off

The section from Cilcain to Moel Arthur is an easy farm track. Cross the road at the base of Moel Arthur and head North up another farm track. The track peters out and a gps or map and compass may be needed to find the route across fields to Bryn-ffynnon. Cross the road heading North West towards Nant Coed. This section can be boggy in wet weather. My route took the path North East towards Moel y Parc (signed) leaving the track to head along the contour, then dropping down towards Grove Hall. It's probably a good idea to take the lower path around Fron haul if the ground is very wet. At Grove Hall head down to Bodfari. Refreshments may be available in the Downing Arms, but they don't always open mid day. Better to check.

Return

Head back up to Grove Hall turning right through the grounds of the Hall onto the Offa's Dyke path. It's a good slog back up the hill to where you saw the Moel y Park sign. At the top turn right, heading South. Follow an easy track finally turning left, North East, onto a forestry track. At the car park head South East on the Offa's Dyke path towards Moel Arthur. At Moel Arthur take the farm track returning to Cilcain.

The really hardy could continue along the Offa's Dyke path to Moel Famau and drop down to Cilcain and the old waterworks from there.

My route takes in a well deserved pint at the White Horse Cilcain before returning to the old water works.
